Standard Door Handle Height

Subsection 3 4 manual door hardware states that door handles should be at a minimum height of between 0 9 and 1 0 meters from the floor surface to provide a comfortable way for wheelchair users to open a door.

Sub zero stainless steel door handles are typically mounted 1 1 2 from the handle side of the door or top of the drawer. This height is measured from a finished floor. Overlay panels must be a minimum of 5 8 thick to support mounting the handle. According to international building code 2012 door handles or knobs should be installed 34 inches 864 mm minimum and 48 inches 1219 mm maximum above the finished floor.

The handle may be set off center however it will make the drawer harder to open. In most cases handles and knobs should be installed at a height of 34 to 48 inches from the finished floor. The height of the door handle is not so much the problem as the door handle itself. The international building code also requires all projections into a hallway doorway or other means of access to have a handle that fits a wheelchair use.

It however suggests that if the door leads to a swimming pool the doorknob be placed 48 to 54 inches from the finished floor. This is a 36 wide x 94 tall decorative wood entry door that is not a slab it has panels and glazing in specific areas. Locks used only for security purposes and not used for normal opera tion are permitted at any height.

Installers typically drill the hole centered 36 inches above the floor if not specifically instructed to do so differently. The code prescribes that the height of a doorknob be approximately between 34 and 48 inches from a finished floor. The door knob would sit at approximately 4 0 from the ground. The code requires that the height of a doorknob above the floor is approximately between 34 and 48 inches.

All handles pulls latches locks and other operable parts of the door should measure between 34 inches and 48 inches above the floor. The international building code has established doorknob height between 34 and 48 inches above a finished floor. Measuring height depth and width are just the beginning. Fortunately the standards for ada door handle height are not much different than traditional recommendations.
